If you are an individual with severe financial difficulties, you can petition for your own bankruptcy, or a creditor who is owed more than £5,000 can petition to make you bankrupt.  Upon bankruptcy, creditors can no longer pursue you for the amounts you owe them.  Control of your financial affairs (known as your estate) passes to the Official Receiver, who then decides whether to appoint a Trustee in Bankruptcy to realise your assets in order to help repay your debts.  To find out more about bankruptcy visit here.
